canal flood gate - stopping leaks floods outside canal flood gate
The above 2 views are from where the canal passes through the flood defencesdownstream of the canal port - this is the Trent flooding the canal downstreamof the village. i.e. the flow at this time was from the Trent at CavendishBridge, across the fields to this point, across the canal and into thefields shown here that had already been flooded by the Derwent. These boatsare moored bow-to the offside of the canal, the JCB being on the serviceroad to the moorings. These 2 views can be related by reference to thetwo men and gate in middle distance. The distant buildings are Great Wilne.
The flood gates and banks help prevent flooding of the canal port area, but some properties were flooded as the pumps were unable to cope withthe various sources of leakage.
